The NAMI Center provides a welcoming place for education, support and advocacy efforts as well as social activities for families and consumers (individuals with mental illness). The Beautiful Mind Center is supported by occassional small grants and donations from the community.

Each support group is led by trained facilitators who themselves have or have had a mentally ill family member. Support and educational classes offered by NAMI Hernando are free and open to the public.

Mental illness is a disease of the brain manifesting itself in many ways such as; Major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD, personality disorders, ADHD, post traumatic stress disorder, autism, just to name a few. Mental illness is treatable with appropriate medical care and rehabilitation. Many people recover from mental disease enough to live productive lives.

Program Schedule

Peer to Peer Class - Starts 5/17/17 This is a free 10 week course for consumers, which meets once a week. The focus is on a holistic approach to recovery using a combination of lectures, interactive exercises and stress management techniques. It is taught by trained "mentors" who are successful at living with and managing their own mental illness. Registration required.

Family to Family Class - Starts 4/20/17 This is a free 12 week course for family caregivers of individuals with moderate to severe mental illness. Attendess learn about effective treatment; problem solving, communication techniques; handling crisis and relapse, & locating support and services in the community. Registration required. Call the office to register.

NAMI Basics Class - Starts 3/21/17 This is a free six week course for parents/caregivers of children under the age of 18 who develop symptoms of mental illness. Attendees are given the tools to use, even after completing the program that will assist in making the best decisions for the care of the child. Registration required.

NAMI Connection is a weekly recovery support group for people living with mental illness in which people learn from each other’s experiences, share coping strategies, and offer each other encouragement and understanding.

NAMI Family Support Groups are free, confidential and safe groups of families helping other families who live with mental health challenges by utilizing their collective lived experiences and learned group wisdom.

Family To Family Education Course

This 12 week class is designed for the family members to give them support and understanding of their loved ones illness. It teaches about the various mental illnesses, medications, coping skills, etc.. Trained by NAMI trainers and taught by members who have relatives with mental illness.
Focuses on helping family members understand and cope with mental illness of their loved ones.

This 10 week class is for the person experiencing problems with the mental disease and is designed to help them with recovery. Taught by trained consumers (persons with mental illness) who are living well with their illness.

NAMI Basics Class

6 Week Class
This 6 week class is for the parents/caregivers of a child under the age of 18 experiencing ADHD, ADD, Bipolar, ODD and various other mental illnesses in an effort to gain a better understanding of the child and to learn coping skills. The class is taught by trained teachers who have children with a mental illness.
Course created for parents of children under 18 years exhibiting signs of mental health issues.
Registration is Required.
